BORSE DI STUDIO E DOTTORATI DI RICERCA

La Confederazione Svizzera bandisce per l'a.a. 2019/2020 finanziamenti e borse di studio destinate a studenti dottorandi o post-dottorato, appartenenti a tutti i settori di disciplinari, per proseguire le proprie ricerche in università o enti pubblici svizzeri, con scadenza per le domande di partecipazione fissata al 25 novembre 2018. 

In particolare si segnala il bando di post-doc scholarships per trascorrere un periodo di ricerca in Svizzera, presso uno degli Enti di ricerca svizzeri riportati nel bando (10 Università Pubbliche svizzere, 2 “Federal Institutes of Technology, 

istituti di ricerca o Università di scienze applicate), destinate a candidati che abbiano conseguito il titolo di dottorato dopo il 31 dicembre 2015 e prima del 31 agosto 2019. L'importo delle borse è di 3.500 CHF mensili (pari a circa 3.000 Euro) più 300 CHF (pari a 

circa 263 Euro) per le spese di prima sistemazione per una durata di 12 mesi (inizio della borsa Settembre 2019). L’Application package deve essere richiesto all’ambasciata svizzera a Roma.  

Si segnala, inoltre, il bando avente ad oggetto research fellowships, rivolte a laureati in qualsiasi disciplina per intraprendere, nell’ambito 

del loro PhD o della specializzazione in Medicina, un periodo di ricerca in Svizzera, presso uno degli Enti riportati nel bando (10 Università Pubbliche 

svizzere, 2 “Federal Institutes of Technology, istituti di ricerca o Università di scienze applicate). Sono ammessi alla partecipazione i candidati in possesso di laurea magistrale (o titolo equivalente) nati dopo il 31 dicembre 1983 e l'importo della borsa è di 1.920 CHF mensili (pari a circa 1.686 Euro) più 300 CHF (pari a circa 263 Euro) per le spese di prima sistemazione per una durata di 12 mesi (non rinnovabili). Inizio della borsa Settembre 2019. Anche in questo caso l'application package deve essere richiesto all’ambasciata svizzera a Roma. 

Infine, nell'ambito dello stesso bando della Confedarazione svizzera, si segnalano le offerte di borse di dottorato di ricerca al di fine di frequentare un corso di dottorato  in Svizzera, 

presso uno degli Enti di ricerca svizzeri riportati nel bando (10 Università Pubbliche svizzere, 2 “Federal Institutes of Technology, “Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID)”. Anche in questo caso  l’application package deve essere richiesto all’ambasciata svizzera a Roma.

Fall Semester News  We hope you have all settled into our new space well. While things are less hectic with the move, this October is sure to be an eventful one.  The Fall Semester continues, with both classes and the Colloquium series well underway. In this issue we will talk about the Transnational Litigation class trip to the UK Supreme Court, the first in our Career Talk series and the exciting events that are upcoming this month, including our second Lecture in Transnational Justice. Yours in transnational legal education, Carlos M. Vázquez & Miri Gur-Arye Academic Co-Directors 2018-2019 Lecture in Transnational Justice   We are excited to announce, Professor Neal Katyal will be joining us for our second Lecture in Transnational Justice on Wednesday 10th October to discuss ‘Balancing the Rule of Law and National Security.’ Professor Katyal is a partner at the firm Hogan Lovells and Paul and Patricia Saunders professor of law at Georgetown University, and is one of the youngest professors to receive tenure and chaired professorship at Georgetown University Law Center.                The lecture will take place in The Great Hall at King’s College London and will be followed by a wine, soft drinks and nibbles reception. There are limited spaces so make sure you register ASAP!   Coming Up in October  Career Talk Our students will have the opportunity to meet the Ambassador of Switzerland to the UK, Alexandre Fasel as he joins us to for a career talk. Mr Fasel took up his duties as Ambassador of Switzerland last September.  He specialised in European and International Law and was a Junior Fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation at Oxford University. Movie Night This month's movie is Crude (2009), Dir. Joe Berlinger. Crude is a documentary that focuses on the oil industry and its impact in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Berlinger takes us through the one of the world's largest oil-related environmental lawsuit, which he happens to find himself in the middle of.          Mid-Semester Pub Night We're already almost half way through the semester! Current Students will be invited for a celebratory drink, keep an eye out for more information. Guided Tour of the UK Supreme Court   Last month, students from the European Civil Procedure and Transnational Litigation courses received a guided tour of the UK Supreme Court. Students learnt about the story of The Supreme Court and the important role it has for the last 600 years, and will continue to have, in the development of UK law. They were also able to explore all three court rooms and the exclusive Justices’ Library (as seen in pictures below), which is usually closed to the public.                        The guided tour provided students with an insight into all aspects of the Court, from the history and importance of the artwork in the Court, to listening to examples of cases that have been heard by the Court. We have had wonderful, positive reviews from both students and faculty about this visit and look forward to sharing more stories like this. Career Talk Grace Cheng and Lauren Suding, Field Court Chambers In late September, we were very pleased to welcome Grace Cheng and Lauren Suding from Field Court Chambers in London, to speak to students about their work as barristers. Students enjoyed an informal talk and Q&A sessions with our guests over some refreshments during Afternoon Tea. Transnational Law Colloquium The Colloquium series continued with an engaging discussion led by Eirik Bjorge (University of Bristol) on The Protection of Legitimate Expectations in International Law. This was followed by CTLS Professor Ann O'Connell (University of Melbourne), who gave a thought-provoking talk about Women in Tax.                           Just last week we welcomed Professor Marko Milanovic (University of Nottingham) to discuss Courting Failure: When are International Criminal Courts Likely to be Believed by Local Audiences?. SEMINAIRE PILAGG Encounters with Alterity in Legal Form   Professor Horatia Muir Watt Full Professor at Sciences Po École de Droit   This PILAGG seminar animated by Professor Horatia Muir Watt will revolve a core question for global or post-monist jurisprudence: What are the law’s modes of encounters with alterity? Indeed, the “global turn” in law is not limited to a tightening of its own structural linkages with the economy, but involves constant exposure or interactions with foreign societies, cultures and ideologies. One response in legal form to ubiquitous otherness, including cultural difference, can be found by joining up with various strands of contemporary interdisciplinary scholarship in exploring the insights to be found in the specific methodologies of private international law. Post-monist legal approaches appear as a “dangerous method” that leads to a decentering of the self, a moment of void at the point of encounter of difference, a suspension of judgment. While such a method leaves behind the comfortable linearity of legal monism, a look towards private international law’s specific intellectual schemes show that the ensuing vertigo is to be embraced as a form of enrichment of law’s horizons and modes of reasoning. BREXIT: A CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS FOR THE UNITED KINGDOM?

Paul James Cardwell will speak on the theme "Brexit: a constitutional crisis for the United Kingdom?".

Since the 23 June 2016 and the victory of the 'leave' vote in the EU referendum, the United Kingdom has been faced with a number of significant and urgent economic, political and legal conundrums. The process of leaving the European Union after over 40 years of integration has brought into question much of what we know about the constitution of the United Kingdom. This presentation will address some of the main considerations facing the United Kingdom and its unwritten constitution which have been triggered by the withdrawal process. These include some of the most fundamental constitutional issues, including the separation of powers, devolution and the protection of fundamental rights. The argument is made that the potentially rapid changes to the way in which the UK operates can be justifiably characterised as an ongoing constitutional crisis.

Paul James Cardwell is Professor of Law and Associate Dean (Internationalisation) at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, since 2017. He is a Principal Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. He studied law at the Universities of Warwick, Lille II, Nagoya (Japan), political science at Sciences Po Bordeaux and obtained his PhD from the University of Edinburgh. Prior to joining Strathclyde, he was a Lecturer and Reader at the University of Sheffield. He has held visiting positions at Zagreb (Croatia) and the Centre d’études européennes, Sciences Po Paris and was Treasurer of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) 2013-2016. He has published over 70 books and journal articles in the areas of EU external relations and foreign policy, migration, democracy promotion and Brexit. He is a regular media contributor and has appeared on BBC television and radio, iTele and France Info and has given keynote lectures in countries including Armenia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Japan and Thailand.
