SEMINAIRE PILAGG Standard Contracts as Pathways to Global Markets - the Experience of the London Corn Trade Association (1880-1914) Professor Jérôme SGARD (Professeur d'économie politique à Sciences Po)   Commodity markets were typically governed during the first global era (ca 1870-1914) by private, London-based “Trade Associations”, managed by a small number of top market insiders. One of their key contribution was to write and constantly adjust a set of Standard Contracts, tailored to each specific commodity and to each country or port of origin. These contracts followed the English contract law and were confirmed and eventually enforced by English courts. But such intervention proved extremely rate, just as, more generally the support from government authorities when dealing with foreign countries or authorities. No concern whatsoever was shown either for rules of international law (private or public). Lecture in Transnational Justice -- 4 April 2018, 6:00pm Identifying Customary International Law Sir Michael Wood Member, UN International Law Commission Senior Fellow, Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge Sir Michael Wood is a member of the UN International Law Commission, and a Senior Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge.  He is a barrister at 20 Essex Street, London, where he practises in the field of public international law, including before international courts and tribunals.  He was Legal Adviser to the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office between 1999 and 2006, having joined as an Assistant Legal Adviser in 1970.    The lecture forms part of the research and public engagement work taking place at CTLS this year. SEMINAIRE PILAGG Constitutional Geography and Geopolitics Professor Günter Frankenberg (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main – Institute for Public Law)   Partition comes neither naturally nor happens by accident. It results from bitter controversy. War, civil war and occupation often precede territorial separation. Whereas liberation struggles are likely to inspire secession on the part of separatist movements, political division may be the upshot of strategic plans devised by occupying powers and colonial regimes and is liable to be charted in geographical and geopolitical terms. Professor Horatia Muir Watt

Professor, Science Po Law School

Horatia Muir Watt is tenured Professor at Sciences Po, where she is Co-Director of the program “Global Governance Studies » (which covers private international law, arbitration and litigation, human rights) within the Master’s Degree in Economic Law.

Horatia Muir Watt received a PhD in private international law from the University of Panthéon-Assas Paris 2 in 1985 and passed the agrégation examination in private law in 1986. She is a tenured Professor in private international law and in comparative law. She taught at the University of Tours, at the University of Paris XI, and at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne between 1996 and 2009 and was appointed to Sciences Po in 2009, when she participated actively in the creation of the law school.

She is a Member of the Institute of International Law (since 2013).

She is Editor-in-chief of the Revue critique de droit international privé (the leading French-language journal on private international law) and a member of the publication committees of numerous other legal journals, among which the Journal of Private International Law, European Review of Contract Law and Transnational Legal Theory.

She founded the PILAGG (private international law and global governance) research group, now run with the LSE. The launching article is « Private International Law beyond the Schism », (2011) 2(3) Transnational Legal Theory 347–427. The first publication of the research group’s collective work is currently in process with Oxford University Press.


The lecture forms part of the research and public engagement work taking place at CTLS this year.

Conversazione su "Lo Stato in Dante"

Venerdì 19 gennaio alle 10, nell'aula magna di Palazzo Pedagaggi (dipartimento di scienze politiche e sociali, via Vittorio Emanuele II, 49), conversazione intorno al volume "Lo Stato in Dante - Una teologia politica per l'impero" di Hans Kelsen. 

Una rilettura della prima opera giovanile di Kelsen, in cui il teorico del diritto affronta e ripensa il "De Monarchia" di Dante e la sua grandiosa visione di una teologia politica posta a fondamento di un governo globale del mondo, con la presentazione di Pier Giuseppe Monateri (Università di Torino) e la postfazione di Tommaso Edoardo Frosini(Università Suor Orsola Benincasa di Napoli), che intervengono in occasione della presentazione a Catania insieme con Mario Patrono (professore emerito dell’Università di Roma “La Sapienza”).

Partecipano all'incontro i docenti del Dsps Salvatore Aleo, Delia La Rocca, Felice Giuffrè, Matteo Negro, Fabrizio Sciacca, Fabrizio Tigano e Giuseppe Vecchio; le conclusioni sono affidate al prorettore dell'Università di Catania Giancarlo Magnano San Lio.

L'iniziativa fa parte delle attività del dottorato di ricerca in Scienze politiche ed è organizzata nell'ambito del Piano di Ricerca 2016/2018 “Consenso e autorità. Nuove fonti e nuovi modelli di esercizio del potere”.
